I think every company wanted to jump on the Transformer craze of the 1980ies - even View Master (yes, the same View Master as in "stereoscope" viewers and reels). The colours are there... the general idea is there... Optimus Prime and Co. ? Not really...

Even though this craft never appeared on TV, it was used by International Rescue (AKA Thunderbirds) in the comics. JR21 went at it and ... voilà, the Bandai version.
